Flooring Accessories: The Ultimate Guide to Perfecting Your Renovation

You have spent hours selecting the perfect laminate, carpet, engineered wood or click vinyl for your home, but the job is not quite finished yet. The difference between an amateur DIY installation and a flawless, professional result often comes down to one crucial element: your choice of flooring accessories.

From the hidden underlay that provides vital acoustic insulation to the elegant door bars that seamlessly join two different rooms together. These finishing touches are an integral part in both the visual element and ensuring that warranty guidelines and correct procedures are followed. Our team has put together a comprehensive guide for you to understand exactly why accessories are an integral part of the completion of your project.

The Importance of High-Quality Flooring Accessories

When planning a room makeover, it is incredibly easy to overlook the smaller details. However, investing in the right flooring accessories is just as important as the installation of the flooring itself.

Functionally, these components serve to protect the vulnerable edges of your flooring from chips and daily wear, while also safely covering the essential expansion gaps required for wood and laminate products. Visually they provide a clean, polished transition from room to room, hiding unsightly joints and ensuring your beautiful new floor is fitted perfectly.

Essential Finishing Touches for Every Room

There is a wide array of products designed to solve specific installation challenges. Here are the most common finishing touches you will need to consider for your project:

  • Underlay: While you cannot see it, underlay is arguably the most important addition for your laminate and engineered wood floors. It provides a vital barrier against moisture, offers thermal insulation, reduces impact noise, and adds a luxurious, cushioned feel underfoot. Please note that our click vinyl floors do not require underlay as this can have an adverse effect on the product.
  • Door Bars and Thresholds: Used in doorways, these metal or wood-effect strips create a safe and seamless bridge between two different types of flooring (such as carpet meeting click vinyl) or floors of different heights. These are integral in ensuring that each room is treated separately. Flooring will naturally need to expand and contract. Having a threshold in the doorways means that the floor will not pull in different directions causing long term damage and excess movement.
  • Scotia and Beading: Hard flooring like laminate and engineered wood naturally expands and contracts, meaning a small expansion gap must be left around the perimeter of the room. Scotia is a decorative moulding used to neatly cover this gap without the need to remove and replace your skirting boards.
  • Stair Nosing: Designed to be fitted to the edge of your steps, for our wood nosing’s these are a flush fit slotting into the tongue of the floor. For the MDF and Click vinyl nosing’s these are designed to go on top of the flooring. One of the most important features of the click vinyl nosing is that they wrapped in the same vinyl as the floor giving a more seamless finish.

Matching Your Flooring Accessories to Your Decor

One of the biggest challenges homeowners face is finding the right flooring accessories to match your floor of choice. If you purchase your floor from a general DIY superstore, you will likely find a very limited selection of generic, poorly matched profiles.

By visiting a dedicated flooring specialist, you gain access to a massive variety of colours, materials, and finishes. We have thousands of door bars in stock with colour matches to not only our full range of flooring but to match to hundreds of other brands. That way if you are unlucky enough to not choose us for your flooring we will at least be able to offer the finish touches to complete your project.

Flooring Accessories FAQs

Do I always need to buy underlay?

Not always, but it is highly recommended. Some modern laminate and click vinyl products come with a pre-attached underlay backing. However, for the vast majority of carpets, wood, and standard laminates, purchasing a separate, high-quality underlay is essential for comfort, insulation, and protecting your floor’s locking system. With wood floors you can also use a flexible adhesive to stick the flooring to the sub floor.

What is the difference between scotia and beading?

While the terms are often used interchangeably when shopping for flooring accessories, they refer to the shape of the moulding. Scotia has a concave (curved inward) profile, whereas beading (or quadrant) has a convex (curved outward) profile. Both serve the exact same purpose: covering expansion gaps.

Can I install these accessories myself?

Yes! Most modern door bars, profiles, and scotia are designed to be DIY-friendly. They can be easily cut to size with a hacksaw or mitre shears and are typically installed using strong adhesives, grab adhesives, or simple screw-in track systems.
