I laid herringbone vinyl flooring in our box room last spring. Two days of work. One layout I had to rip up. And a new respect for fitters who do this for a living.
Click together, no glue. Forgiving enough for a first attempt at a pattern that punishes sloppy measuring. (I tested that last part personally.)
Here is what that job taught me about the material, the ranges and the things worth checking before a single pack gets opened.

Why Herringbone Vinyl Flooring Suits Busy Homes
Plain plank is a background. Herringbone is a conversation. The zig-zag pulls the eye down a room and gives even a dull hallway some rhythm.
Practical side first. It is what gets asked at the counter. The click ranges are waterproof as a material, so spills sit there waiting for a cloth. Underfoot it feels warmer than tile and it shrugs off a dropped mug.
It hides daily scuffs as well. Busy pattern, small marks, plenty of camouflage. Bramble’s claws have not marked the box room floor yet and he uses it as a racetrack.
The catch lives in busy rooms. A patterned floor under patterned wallpaper makes a small space shout. I would keep the walls calm wherever the floor is doing the talking.
What Herringbone Vinyl Flooring Is Made Of
Under the print there is a rigid core. Stone plastic composite in most of the ranges we stock, the same family as a lot of click flooring. The pieces sit about 6.5mm thick and run 128mm by 640mm, which is what sets the scale of the pattern.
The wear layer is the part worth understanding. It is the clear top film between you and the print. Measured in fractions of a millimetre, oddly enough. Value Herringbone runs 0.30mm. Editions Herringbone goes to 0.55mm. How a floor survives a busy hallway starts with that number.
Built-in underlay is standard on both ranges. No separate underlay to buy. The click systems (UNICLIC on these two) mean no glue either. The construction is waterproof, phthalate free and compatible with most underfloor heating setups, so check the product page for the specific one you pick.
Choosing Between Herringbone Vinyl Flooring Ranges
Value and Editions answer different questions.
Value Herringbone is the budget-sensible one. Four colours, mostly warm oak tones. The listings give it a 15-year residential warranty. I fitted it in the box room because that floor sees slippers and not much else.
Editions Herringbone is the range built for daily life. Twelve designs in there, with names like Hever Oak and Claremont Oak. Chartwell Stone too, though the name misleads a little. It is a wood design, not a stone one. You are paying for that 0.55mm wear layer. The lifetime residential warranty comes with it. In a hallway or a family kitchen I would fit Editions every time.
Commercial jobs have their own answer. Editions carries a 20-year commercial warranty on the listings. Value comes with a 5-year one.
Rooms, Light and the Herringbone Effect
Open-plan rooms love it. The pattern holds a big floor together visually. In a wide space plain plank can drift, and herringbone keeps the eye moving.
Hallways are the natural home. The pattern runs with the direction of travel. A narrow hall gains some length from it. Ours is still carpeted, for now. The red argument continues.
Herringbone vinyl flooring works well in kitchens too. Warm underfoot at seven in the morning. The pattern also disguises the crumbs between sweeps.
Light changes the colour more than people expect. Warm oak tones lift a dark hall. Greyer shades can go flat in north light, which a sage sample in our living room proved to me years ago. Samples come home with me and live on the floor for a day before anything gets decided.
Fitting and the Subfloor Question
Box room confession. My first layout started at the wrong end and by the third row the pattern was walking away from the threshold. I ripped it up and started again from the centre line. The second attempt took an hour and looked right.
The subfloor decides everything. Click vinyl needs flat and firm under it. Herringbone vinyl flooring is less forgiving here, because the pattern shows every dip twice. Old floorboards and tile adhesive ridges get sorted before the first piece goes down.
Cuts generate waste. Herringbone offcuts pile up faster than plank, and my first order was short by three pieces. Bring the room measurements to the showroom and let the team work out the quantity. Our how to measure a room guide covers the sketching side.
Edges finish with profiles and nosings. Flooring accessories has the matching ones. Grab those with the floor rather than in a second trip.
Cleaning and Living With Herringbone Vinyl Flooring
Herringbone vinyl flooring asks for very little. A brush or a vacuum most days. A damp mop when it needs more.
No polish and no wax. The mop is the whole ritual.
Felt pads under furniture legs. That is the entire protection plan. Chairs dragged across a wear layer are what shorten a floor’s life, in my experience.
Bramble has tested the box room floor daily for months and it has not marked. Claws on a 0.55mm wear layer are a non-event. With a lighter one I would still keep dog nails trimmed.
Where to See Herringbone Vinyl Flooring in Person
Our Croydon showroom stocks the Pro-Tek™ click ranges and herringbone sits across them. Both Value Herringbone and Editions Herringbone are listed online with their colours and specs.
Photos flatten the pattern. The angles read differently under showroom light and again on your own floor, so I would see it in person before committing. Bring a photo of the room and the team will pull the closest tones. Browse the vinyl click range first if you want a feel for what is listed.
Stock moves in a clearance business. Ring 020 3004 6630 before travelling if a specific colour matters. Trade buyers doing several rooms can apply for a trade account.
We are at 66 Purley Way, Croydon, CR0 3JP, next to Matalan and The Range with free parking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I lay herringbone vinyl flooring myself?
I managed it and I am no fitter. The click part is straightforward. The layout needs care, because the pattern walks quickly once it is out of line. Start from a centre line and dry lay a few rows first.
What is the difference between Value and Editions herringbone?
Value runs a 0.30mm wear layer and carries four colours with a 15-year residential warranty. Editions is the heavier spec. It runs 0.55mm with a lifetime residential warranty and twelve designs. For busy floors I fit Editions.
Is herringbone vinyl flooring waterproof?
The listings describe both ranges as 100% waterproof, so spills on the surface are not the problem. Water under the floor still is. Sealed subfloor, dry room, edges finished properly.
Does herringbone vinyl flooring need underlay?
No. Both ranges carry a built-in underlay. It is one of the nicest things about the format.
Can it go over underfloor heating?
Yes. Water or electric, it copes with both. I would still check the heating manufacturer’s maximum temperature before you buy. Every floor has a top rating and the system needs to stay under it.
How much herringbone vinyl flooring will I need?
Measure the room in metres and multiply width by height for the area. Then add a cutting allowance on top. Herringbone generates more offcut than plank does. The showroom team will sanity-check your figure.
Which way should herringbone vinyl flooring run?
Down the longest sightline is the usual answer. In a hall that means with the hall. In an open room, toward the main window. Taste plays a part though. Dry lay a few rows both ways and pick.
The box room floor still gets more comments than anything else in the house. Two days. One wasted layout. The best money of the lot.
If herringbone is calling you, bring your measurements to the showroom at 66 Purley Way, Croydon, CR0 3JP and we will work out the quantity and the trims while you are here. Free parking next to Matalan and The Range. Questions before that? The flooring FAQ answers plenty of it. For anything else there is the team on 020 3004 6630.
